The Greenville College men’s and women’s track and field team split up this week as members of the squad traveled to Wisconsin La Crosse, North Central, and Augustana in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA DIII Championships. Thursday kicked off the first of the week’s competition, with athletes traveling to Wisconsin La Crosse for the WLU Qualifier. Kristin Schutte launched her best throw of the season in the javelin to lead the team, notching an NCAA qualifying mark of 41.74m.
Schutte, a junior throws specialist from Stewardson, Ill., set her lifetime personal best at the out-of-state meet, improving by nearly five feet on her way to another first place finish in the javelin. She also broke her own school record of 39.98m with Thursday’s effort, and currently sits at 15th in the nation.
On the men’s side, the 4x100m relay squad of Phillip Thomas, Mark Mitchell, Josh Garcia, and Brian White blazed to a second place finish behind their fastest time of the season. The foursome posted an NCAA qualifying time of 41.17.
Men’s and women’s track and field continue this week with both the North Central and Augustana meets taking place tomorrow, May 20. Distance specific athletes will be competing at NC and throwers and field participants will compete at Augustana.
